Swap the rental ceiling light for a pendant with a screw-in socket adapter.

The bulb comes out, the adapter goes in, and the fixture you hate goes in a bag under the sink.

The kit

Five things, and you may only need two

Every link here was opened on Sep 19, 2026. Name, variant, why it is that one, and what is wrong with it.

The concession, and it costs me the biggest sale on the page: if your ceiling already gives you a bare bulb on a cord, skip the adapter. A paper lantern shade clips straight onto the bulb and gets you most of the way for a fraction of the money. The adapter is for the flush mounted dome, which cannot be improved any other way.

  • Worth Home Products Instant Pendant, adapter only

satin brass · screw-in E26 · adapter only, no bulb

The part the project is named after. Adapter only is the version to buy: it lets you hang a shade you like instead of the one that came in the box.

The catchIt is sold as a 6 in recessed can conversion, and that is where its canopy is designed to sit. On a flush mount it threads into the same socket once the dome and bulb are off, but measure the fixture plate against the canopy before you order, not after.

A scale: adapter plus shade sits under one and a half pounds combined, or the weight moves to a swag hook instead. adapter + shade about 1.5 lb, combined over this, use a hook
The same 1.5 lb budget from the mistake below applies to every combination on this list.
  • Worth Home pendant conversion kit, woven drum shade

brushed bronze · woven drum shade · adjustable cord

The same adapter with a shade already on it, for anybody who would rather make one decision than three. The woven drum throws a pattern on the ceiling at night that a plain paper drum does not.

The catchBronze is a commitment. In a room with black or chrome fittings it reads as the wrong decade, and you cannot swap the finish without buying the adapter again.

  • Round rice paper lantern shades, set of three

    12, 14 and 16 in · set of 3 · rice paper

Paper weighs nothing, which is why it belongs on a socket adapter. Three sizes means you can try the 16 in over the table and move the 12 in to the hall.

The catchPaper yellows over a hot bulb and it dents if anything touches it. Run an LED in it, and do not put one where a door swings.

Side view: a clear bulb sits right at the sightline of someone seated at the table; a frosted bulb spreads that same light instead of showing the filament. clear = the filament, straight on frosted seated eye level
Why the catch on the bulb below is not a small detail: a pendant hangs where you already look.
  • GE Relax HD A19 bulbs, 2700K

    A19 · 60 W replacement · 2700K frosted · 4 pack

Frosted matters more here than anywhere else, because a pendant hangs at eye level over a table and a clear bulb at that height is a headache with a filament in it. 2700K is where a dining room belongs.

The catchCheck the adapter maximum wattage before you buy anything brighter, and use one temperature across the whole room. Mixing them is what makes a room feel wrong in a way nobody can name.

A two ink cross section of a dining room seen from the side. A cord leaves the existing ceiling rose at the far left, runs along the ceiling to a first hook, across to a second hook, and drops from there to a cone shade hanging over the middle of the table. An arrow marks the drop between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade, and a second arrow runs across the width of the table. A chair stands at each end.
If the fixture is not over the middle of the table, swag it. The hook takes the weight, not the socket.
  • Aluminum ceiling swag hooks

6 pack · aluminum · for hanging lights

Only needed if the fixture is off center from the table, which in a rental it usually is. The hook takes the weight and the cord drapes to it, so the socket carries current only.

What goes wrong

People take the whole fixture down, and that is a different project

Halfway through removing the glass dome it looks obvious to keep going and unscrew the ceiling plate too. Do not. The moment that plate comes off you are looking at wire nuts and a junction box, which is electrical work you are not insured for and your lease almost certainly forbids. The adapter exists so that line never gets crossed: it screws into the socket the bulb came out of, and the fixture stays bolted to the ceiling throughout.

Cross section: below the ceiling plate is the socket the adapter uses; above it are the wire nuts the adapter never touches. ceiling plate: stays bolted, never removed the line the adapter keeps you on this side of socket: the only part touched
Below the line is a bulb socket. Above it is an electrician's job.

The second one is weight. That socket was engineered to hold a bulb. Hang a metal shade off it and the plastic shell cracks, usually months later, usually while you are out. Keep the adapter and shade together under about a pound and a half, or swag the cord to a ceiling hook so the hook carries the load and the socket only carries current.

that ceiling plate is not a suggestion either

Five steps

Breaker off, parts in a bag, then the fun bit

Forty five minutes, and the first ten are the boring ten that get your deposit back.

Four panels in a row: a hand switching off a breaker in a consumer unit, a frosted glass dome being lifted off a ceiling fixture, a screw-in pendant adapter being turned into the empty bulb socket, and a drum shade being hung from the adapter over a table.
Breaker, dome, adapter, shade. The order is not a suggestion.
  1. 01

Turn off the breaker, not the wall switch

A wall switch can be wired on the neutral side, in which case the socket is live with the switch off. Kill the circuit at the panel, then flick the switch on and confirm the light stays dark.

What goes wrongTrusting the switch. It is the single most common way people get a shock in a rental.

  2. 02

Take the dome off and bag every part with a label

The dome, the finial screws, the bulb, anything that falls into your hand. One freezer bag, one label. Photograph the fixture before you touch it.

What goes wrongLosing one thumbscrew. A missing thumbscrew is the whole fixture on your deposit statement.

A two ink drawing looking straight down at an open zip freezer bag lying flat. Inside it, drawn as plain outlines, are a rounded glass dome, three thumbscrews and one bulb. A strip of tape across the front of the bag carries a few wobbly scribbled strokes standing in for handwriting.
Everything that falls into your hand, in one bag, with the label on the outside.
  3. 03

Screw the adapter in and check what the canopy sits against

It goes in exactly like a bulb, finger tight and no further. The canopy is meant to sit flat and cover the opening, so check it is wider than whatever it lands on before you order.

What goes wrongOvertightening. The adapter is plastic threaded into plastic, and it strips.

  4. 04

Swag it if the fixture is not over the middle of the table

Rental ceiling lights are centered on the room, not on where the table ended up. One hook with the cord draped to it puts the shade where you eat, and the hook is a pencil sized hole you fill in thirty seconds.

What goes wrongSwagging from the adapter itself. The hook has to take the weight, not the socket.

  5. 05

Set the drop with somebody sitting at the table

Side view: the shade hangs 30 to 36 inches above the table top, measured from a chair at the table. 30-36 in table
Measured from someone sitting in the far chair, not from a ladder.

The bottom of the shade wants to be 30 in to 36 in above the table top. Sit in the far chair: if you can see the bulb, it is too high, and if you are leaning around it to talk, it is too low.

What goes wrongSetting the height standing up on the ladder, looking down at the shade instead of across at it.

The part

It is a bulb with a hook on the end of it

A screw-in pendant socket adapter held in one hand, close up, showing the threaded base, the canopy and the cord coming out of it.
Threaded base, canopy, cord. Nothing on it needs a screwdriver.

It threads into an E26 socket, which is the standard screw base in almost every American ceiling, and hands you a cord and a shade fitter on the other end. That is the entire technology, and it is why this is the one lighting change a renter can make in an evening.

A single screw base labeled E26, the one thread every part on this page shares. E26: one base, every part above
Adapter, kit, lantern, bulb: all of it screws into this same thread.

Low deposit risk rather than none, because you are handling the landlord's fixture. The risk is losing a part, not damaging anything.

How to undo it

10 min

The bag under the sink is the whole trick

Breaker off first, same as on the way in. Then it runs backwards.

  1. 01Lift the shade off, unscrew the adapter, take down any swag hook
  2. 02Put the original bulb back in and the glass dome back on
  3. 03One fingertip of filler in the hook hole, wiped flat with a card
Two holes to scale: a screw anchor about a quarter inch across, and the swag hook hole the width of a pencil lead, close to nothing. a drilled anchor the swag hook hole
Nothing was drilled to begin with, so this is the only hole there is to fill.

What is left on the ceiling: the fixture exactly as you found it, and one filled hole the width of a pencil lead if you swagged. Nothing was unwired, so there is nothing to explain.

The adapter and the shade go in the box. They fit the next ceiling too, because E26 is E26 everywhere.

Quick answers

Five questions, and the honest answers

Yes, with a screw-in socket adapter. It threads into the socket the bulb came out of, so the landlord's fixture stays bolted to the ceiling and no wire is ever touched.

Treat a pound and a half as the ceiling for an adapter and shade together. That socket was built to hold a bulb. Anything heavier should hang from a swag hook, with the socket carrying current only.

The bottom of the shade goes 30 to 36 inches above the table top. Set it sitting in the far chair: if you can see the bulb it is too high, and if you are leaning around it to talk it is too low.

Not for this. You need one the moment the ceiling plate comes off and wire nuts appear, which is exactly the line the adapter is there to keep you on the right side of.

Swag it. One hook in the ceiling above the middle of the table, the cord draped to it, and the shade lands where you eat. The hook leaves a hole the width of a pencil lead.
