The living room, for renters.
One rug decision, one lighting problem, and four walls you are not allowed to drill. In that order.

The three numbers of this room
The three that settle most arguments in here
Checked Sep 15, 2026
Thirty seconds
Your room, drawn to scale
Type the two measurements. It picks the largest rug that still leaves at least 8 in of bare floor on every side, tells you what is left over, and draws your room with the sofa and the table in it.
8 × 10 ft
244 × 305 cm
Leaves about 18 in of bare floor on the sides and 18 in at the ends.
A 12 by 15 ft room takes a 9 × 12, not the 10 × 14 you were hoping for: a 10 × 14 would leave 6 in of floor at the ends, under the 8 in minimum. See it drawn in your room →
What feels wrong?
Point at the thing you can see. I will tell you which number it is.
You do not need the vocabulary for this. Pick whichever sentence sounds like your living room, and the rest of the page will have somewhere to land.
Start here
The most common decorating mistake I see is a rug that is too small.
Measure the room, not the sofa. Type two numbers into the calculator in that guide and it gives you the size, the bare floor it leaves on every side, and a plan of your own room drawn to scale. It takes about thirty seconds and it is the only decision in here that costs real money to get wrong.
I have claimed the arm. The cushions are still yours.
In order
The decisions in this room, in the order you make them
Out of order, every one of these costs money. Buy the sofa before the rug and you will be shopping for a rug that fits the sofa instead of the room.
- 01 The rug First, because it draws the footprint everything else has to live inside. A rug bought last is a rug bought to fit the furniture, which is how rooms end up with a small one marooned in the middle. Get my rug size →
- 02 Where the sofa sits Second, because the rug just told you. Front legs on, back legs off, and the walkway behind it stays at 36 in. Most renters already own the sofa, so this step is free. See the front legs rule →
- 03 Light, in three layers Third, and earlier than most people put it, because plenty of rented living rooms have no ceiling fixture at all, only a switched outlet. Three sources beat one: a floor lamp beside the sofa, a table lamp, something washing a wall. See the three layers →
- 04 Curtains Fourth, because the rod height changes how tall the room reads more than anything you could paint. Rod as close to the ceiling as the bracket allows, never less than 4 to 6 in above the frame, brackets 4 to 10 in past it on each side, and the panel touches the floor. Get the rod height →
- 05 Art on the walls Fifth, because the sofa sets the center line and you want to hang once. 6 to 8 in above the furniture, two thirds of its width, and a center around 50 to 54 in rather than 57, because you look at it sitting down. See the 57 inch rule →
- 06 The small stuff Last, and it is the only part that is supposed to be fun. Pillows at 20 to 22 in, big to small, back to front. They echo your ten percent, which lives in one piece the size of an armchair, and they are the part you can swap for the next place. Guide coming
Six steps and the first one is buy nothing. Suits me.
Everything below this line comes off the wall clean when you move. That is the whole rule.
The lease says no
What you cannot change here, and the workaround
- No overhead light
- The single most common thing wrong with a rented living room, and nobody lists it on the ad. A plug-in floor lamp over the reading end of the sofa, a table lamp, and a corded sconce screwed into nothing: three sources, one outlet each. Three layers of light and the plug-in lighting project.
- You cannot paint
- So the color goes in the things you take with you. Peel-and-stick wallpaper on one wall, art, and one chair-sized piece carrying the ten percent, with pillows echoing it. All of it comes off, and all of it moves to the next place. The wallpaper project and the 60 / 30 / 10 split.
You are not repainting anything. That rule stays fixed too.
- You cannot drill
- Command strips rated by the pair, not by the frame, so a 20 lb mirror wants two pairs and a hard look at the wall first. Tension rods inside the window frame. A big mirror leaned against the wall, which reads deliberate and never leaves a hole. How to hang it by weight and the no-drill rod.
- The floor is bad
- Beige carpet, orange laminate, a parquet that has seen things. The answer is the biggest rug that still leaves 8 to 10 in of bare floor on every side, which is the one case where the 18 in rule you read everywhere will wreck you. Measure it properly and the border rule.
Every number on this page came off one of these, in a room somebody actually rents.
The short list
Seven things, and one of them you probably do not need
Everything here is a link that earns me a commission, which is exactly why each one also says where it falls down. Every button opens Amazon in a new tab.

Soalmost washable area rug, beige
8 × 10 ft · low pile · machine washableThe size that fits a standard living room with a three seat sofa and a chair or two. Faded and washed looking rather than patterned, so it sits under almost any palette without picking a fight. It sits at 4.3 stars across 5,208 ratings, checked Sep 15, 2026, which is the range where a review count is worth something.
The catchIt already has a non-slip backing. If sliding is your only worry, skip the pad two rows down.
The rug is the expensive decision. Everything after this is cheaper to get wrong.

Soalmost washable area rug, beige
9 × 12 ft · same rug, largerThe one the calculator picks once your room passes about 12 ft in either direction, including a 12 by 15 ft living room. Same weave, same color, so you are not restarting the search when the number comes back bigger than you expected.
The catchIt is heavy and return shipping on a rug this size is usually on you. Tape the footprint out on the floor for a day first, and you will know before you order.
-
Rug pad, quarter inch felt with silicone backing
8 × 10 ft · buy one size down from the rugWorth it for two things the rug cannot do on its own: cushion you feel the moment you step on hardwood, and taking the wear where chairs drag.
The catchThis is the row you can delete. On carpet a pad does nothing but make a lump, and the rug above already grips a hard floor by itself.
This is the part that lets you skip the drill and still hang the rod high.
-
Joydeco linen curtains, ivory on linen
96 in long · 52 in wide panels · rod pocket and back tabNinety six inches is the length that lets you hang the rod high and still touch the floor, which is the whole trick. Two panels come to 104 in of width, enough fullness for a window up to about 48 in wide.
The catch96 in is only right if your rod lands between about 89 and 96 in from the floor. Measure floor to rod before you buy, or you are hemming curtains on a Sunday.
-
Seaside village arc floor lamp, black
Arched pole · hanging drum shade · foot switchThe answer to a ceiling with nothing in it. The arc puts light over the middle of the sofa, where a reading lamp belongs, while the base stays out at the wall by the outlet. A foot switch means you are not crawling behind the sofa every night.
The catchThe arc needs clear floor behind the seating, roughly three feet of it. In a tight room a straight floor lamp at the end of the sofa does the same job and takes up a quarter of the space.

GE Relax HD LED A19 bulbs, soft white
2700K · 800 lumens · 60 W replacement · 8 pack · dimmable, E262700K is the number that makes a living room look like an evening instead of a waiting area. Save 4000K and up for daytime desk work, and if faces matter to you, look for a CRI of 90 or more. Buying eight at once also means your three lamps finally match.
The catchCheck what is already in your lamps. Half the bulbs sold as soft white are already 2700K, and there is no reason to replace a bulb that is doing its job.
One more thing rented rooms need that has nothing to do with hanging anything.
-
Command large picture hanging strips, white
15 lb rating · 14 pairs, 28 strips · damage freeHow art gets to 57 in without a drill and without a deposit conversation. They come off with a slow pull on the tab, which is the part people skip and then regret.
The catchThe weight is rated per pair, not per frame, so a 20 lb mirror wants two pairs and a wall that will take them. Fresh paint, textured plaster and anything glossy will let go, sometimes a week later.
Quick answers
Six questions about this room
8 × 10 ft in a standard room with a three seat sofa. Measure the room, not the sofa, and take the largest size that still leaves bare floor on every side: about 18 in in a big room, 8 to 10 in in a small one. A 12 by 15 ft room takes a 9 × 12.
The border, again
Same rule the rug pad answer above depends on: measure to the border you actually want left on the floor, not to the wall.
Yes. At least as wide as the sofa, and 6 to 12 in wider on each side if the room allows it. The front legs of the sofa and of every chair sit on the rug. If you can walk between the sofa and the rug without touching it, the rug is too small.
Three sources, not one. A floor lamp beside the sofa, a table lamp on a side table, and something washing a wall, all of them plug-in and all of them 2700K. One bright lamp in a corner makes a room look worse than no lamp at all.
6 to 8 in above the back of the sofa, and let the sofa set the height rather than the floor. Where you sit, a center around 50 to 54 in works better than 57. Make the piece or the group about two thirds the width of the sofa, so the two read as one thing.
14 to 18 in. Close enough to put a glass down without standing up, far enough to walk past without collecting a bruise. Make the table about two thirds the length of the sofa and keep its top within 1 to 2 in of the seat cushion.
Yes, two ways. No-drill brackets that clamp onto the window frame still let you put the rod 4 to 6 in above it, the minimum that keeps the window from looking short. A tension rod inside the frame also works, and you lose the height.
Six answers. I was asleep for four of them.
