Three directions

Come in by the feeling you are after.

Three directions, one method underneath. Pick the one your room already leans toward.

A hand reaching down toward three material swatches on a table: a woven textured square, a plain sage green square and a dark wood-grain sample.

A look is not a shopping trip, it is a ratio. Sixty percent of what you see is the walls and the ceiling, which you mostly cannot change. Thirty is the sofa, the rug, the wood and the curtains. Ten is the part you get to play with, and in a rental that ten is where every bit of your personality has to live, because the walls belong to somebody else.

Each look below gives you its three colors, what carries each part of the ratio, and a shopping list with the catch printed next to every row. Start with the one that makes you want to sit down.

Organic modern material palette laid out flat: cream boucle top left, a raw edged linen swatch top center, an olive branch top right, an oiled walnut board in the middle, a travertine tile beside it, a speckled clay bowl low left, folded olive linen at the bottom and the corner of a faded wool rug bottom right.

Look 01

Organic modern

Warm neutrals, natural wood, linen and clay, with enough texture that the room does not read as empty. Cream, walnut and olive.

  • 60Cream carries the walls, the rug and the sofa. The part you sit in and stop noticing.
  • 30Walnut carries the wood, the curtain rod and the big textiles.
  • 10Olive needs one piece with size, the tree in the corner, then two pillows, one piece of art and one lamp repeat it.

Modern rustic materials stacked against a plaster wall: an oatmeal wool throw on the left, a dark oak board standing behind it, a rust linen cloth folded in front, a glazed brown stoneware vase with dried seed heads, an aged brass handle on a travertine slab and a faded rug swatch on the floor.

Look 02

Modern rustic

Warmth without the farmhouse signs. Old pieces next to new ones, layered wood tones, oatmeal and rust, aged brass, picked up over time instead of in one trip.

Press a material to find it in the photo

  • 60Oatmeal carries the walls, the rug and the sofa. Warmer than gray, quieter than cream.
  • 30Dark wood carries the table, the shelf and the curtain rod. Two wood tones, not one.
  • 10Rust and aged brass carry the throw, two pillows and the lamp. Metal counts as accent.

Colorful collected materials laid out flat: dusty blue velvet draped top left, an oxblood linen swatch folded in the middle, an ochre woven mat behind it, a brass bowl top right, a walnut board low center, a faded rug swatch below it, a blue and white patterned tile on the right and one green leaf bottom left.

Look 03

Colorful & collected

For people who are tired of beige. Mixing patterns without it going loud, dusty blue with oxblood, olive with brass, all on a quiet base.

Press a material to find it in the photo

  • 60Cream carries the walls, the sofa and a gray rug. Make the base loud too and the look falls apart.
  • 30Dusty blue carries the curtains, one chair and the biggest textile in the room.
  • 10Oxblood and brass carry the pillows, the art and the lamp. Two accents, never five.

I unrolled it. You can measure it.

Not sure yet

Start with the rug. It is the one thing all three looks share, it is the hardest thing to return, and it sets the thirty before you have picked a single pillow.
