Before the numbers

Measure the table. Everything else on this page is downstream of it

A dining room is the one room where a single measurement decides four purchases. Take a tape to the table you own, or are about to buy, write down the long side and how many people you want at it, then read the branch that is yours.

24 in a place 72 in seats six
Three places a side at 24 in each is a 72 in table. Count the seats and the length stops being a taste question.
  • Under 60 in · seats four Rug 6 × 9, pendant 16 to 18 in

Six by nine clears the chairs on a 48 in table and stops the rug being the expensive decision. Skip the buffet in row 06 and put a shelf over it instead.

  • 60 to 78 in · seats six Rug 8 × 10, pendant 18 to 24 in

The room in the photo: a 72 by 36 in table, three chairs a side, and the 8 by 10 rug in row 12.

  • Over 78 in · seats eight Rug 9 × 12, pendant 24 in or two

Past 78 in one pendant stops covering the table and you want two, spaced at thirds. Behind the chairs you still need 36 in to push back and stand up.

If the tape says your room cannot give the table 36 in of clearance on the side people walk, the answer is a smaller table, not a smaller rug. See the dining clearances drawn →

A rented dining room in afternoon light: a brass dome pendant hanging over a walnut rectangular table, a framed landscape painting on the wall behind, a walnut sideboard with a tall stone vase of olive branches and a pair of brass candlesticks on it, six cream boucle chairs, a footed stone bowl of olive greenery and a stack of speckled plates with a linen napkin on the table, a faux olive tree in a woven planter by the window, floor length linen curtains, and a faded blue and beige vintage rug under the whole thing.

    30-36

Plug-in swag pendant, brass dome shade

16 in dome · 15 ft fabric cord · in-line switch · swag hook and plug

The bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36 in above the table top: low enough to light the food, high enough that the person opposite is not a silhouette. The dome is half to two thirds of the table width. It hooks into the ceiling where you want light, swags to a corner and plugs in, so the ceiling box you do not have stops mattering.

The catchThe cord crosses your ceiling and no fabric braid hides it. Run it along one line, not diagonally, and hook it at the wall before it drops. Under a fan you cannot remove, light from the buffet instead: the fan always wins.

    6-8 36 of 60 wide

    InSimSea framed vintage landscape canvas

    24 × 36 in · framed canvas · horizontal · ready to hang

One big horizontal piece over the buffet, not four small ones. This is the wall people look at for an hour at a time, and a landscape reads as depth: it pushes the wall back. Hang it 6 to 8 in above the buffet so the two read as one object, and forget the 57 in eye line rule: nobody in this room is standing.

The catchAt 36 in over a 60 in buffet this is 60 percent, the low edge of the two thirds to three quarters range. It reads right only because the pendant crowds the wall above; on a bare wall it would look small. Under a 48 in buffet, take the 24 by 30.

    rod 4-6 up 108

Cream linen back tab curtains, 108 in, two panels

    52 × 108 in · cream · back tab · semi sheer · 2 panels

Dining rooms get the tallest window in the apartment. Hang the rod as close to the ceiling as the bracket allows, never less than 4 to 6 in above the frame, then measure rod to floor before ordering: in a pre-war apartment that is almost always over 96 in, which is why so many rented windows wear curtains floating off the boards. Two panels give the 2 to 2.5 times fullness that makes fabric read as fabric.

The catch108 in of linen is heavy, and back tabs on a tension rod sag within a week. It needs a real rod on real brackets: four screws, or a no-drill bracket gripping the window molding. No molding, no way around drilling.

    vase 14 stems 28-32

SHACOS faux olive branches for vases, six stems

39 in stems · 6 pieces · silk leaves and foam olives · wired stems

Stem length is the whole trick and almost nobody mentions it: roughly twice the height of the vase. A 14 in stone vase wants 28 to 32 in showing, which you get by buying 39 in and cutting them down. Most faux olive sold online is 20 in, disappears into the vase and reads as a green blob. Six stems suits a wide vase: three tall at the back, three leaning forward.

The catchPlastic looks plastic under the hard overhead light a dining room has; these are best under the pendant, at an angle. The vase in the photo is not linked, because a big ceramic vase is the one object here I would buy secondhand.

    10 art starts here

P·TAL pure brass taper candle holder, set of two

    2.5 × 10 in · 100 percent solid brass · set of 2 · standard taper

Candles on the buffet rather than the table, the placement most people get backwards. On the table they block the food and sit at eye height; on the buffet they are the third layer of light in a room that usually has two. Solid brass, not plated steel: plating wears through at the drip line in the first year and leaves a silver candlestick with a gold ring. Ten inches clears the rest of that surface and stays clear of the art.

The catchSolid brass tarnishes, and the people who call that charming are not the ones polishing it. The wooden candlestick set in the shelf guide never needs touching. And a lit taper is an open flame beside your tea towels.

    17 deep 36 chair, seated

SIMPLIHOME Harper 60 in three door buffet, walnut brown

    60 × 17 × 30 in · solid wood · 3 doors · adjustable shelves · tapered legs

A rented dining room is usually a corner of another room with no cupboard. This is the cupboard. Sixty inches of it under a surface you can serve from turns the table back into a table, because a dining table ends up under post and chargers when the room has nowhere else. Check the 17 in depth: a dinner plate plus a hand, shallow enough that a 36 in walkway survives behind a seated person in a room 12 ft across.

The catchThe most expensive object on the page and the one I would delay longest. It arrives flat and takes an evening with an Allen key. On a one-year lease, put a 48 in open shelf there, live with seeing your plates, and spend the difference on the chairs.

sight line 10 wide, 5 tall

Occasionals ceramic decorative bowl with acacia wood base

10 in across · white ceramic · acacia wood foot · food safe

Wide and low, for a practical reason. Anything on a dining table sits in the sight line between two people, so the test is whether you can see the face opposite over it. Ten inches across and five tall passes; a 16 in vase of branches does not, which is why the branches live on the buffet. The wooden foot lifts it enough to read as an object rather than a bowl somebody left out.

The catchHere is where I cost myself a sale: on a table you eat at six nights a week, the honest centerpiece is nothing, because anything permanent lives on the buffet within two weeks. Buy this if your table is for looking at; if it is for eating at, fruit does the job.

    10.5 stands 11.5 leans

AmorArc reactive glaze stoneware dinner plates, set of six

10.5 in · set of 6 · handmade reactive glaze · microwave and dishwasher safe

Six plates because the table seats six, and 10.5 in because that is the last size that slots into a rented dishwasher rack straight. The 11.5 in ones photograph better and then live in the sink for three days. Reactive glaze fires unevenly on purpose, so a stack looks like a stack of things rather than one thing six times, and on walnut with cream chairs that speckle is the only pattern in the room.

The catchVariable is the point and also the complaint: your set will not match the photo and may not match itself. Stoneware chips at the rim against a tap, so you lose this set one plate at a time.

armless: under arms: +4 a side

HULALA HOME boucle dining chairs, ivory, set of two

Ivory boucle · solid wood legs · curved backrest · armless · 2 chairs

Three sets of two gets the six in the photo: 24 in of table edge each on a 72 in table. Armless is a measurement, not a look: arms add about 4 in a side and stop the chair sliding under, which in a room this size is the difference between a walkway and an obstacle course. Boucle is the one upholstered thing in a hard room, and what stops six wooden legs and a wooden table reading as a canteen. Wood legs rather than metal, to rhyme with the table.

The catchLight boucle and dinner are not natural allies: it keeps a red wine ring for life and the loops hold crumbs the way velcro does. With a toddler, or with curry, buy a darker fabric and stop pretending.

    72 x 36 36 36 144 x 108 clear

Plank+Beam classic 72 in dining table, rectangular, walnut wirebrush

    72 × 36 × 30 in · solid wood · rectangular · wirebrush finish · seats 6

The measurement the whole page hangs off: seventy-two by thirty-six seats six at 24 in of edge each and takes an 8 by 10 rug. A rectangle rather than a round one because it can sit against a wall when you need the floor back, and because a round table seating six has to be 60 in across, which needs more floor than a rented dining area has. The wirebrush finish is open grain, so it hides a water ring better than a lacquered top.

The catchMeasure the room, not the table: the table plus 36 in on the two sides people walk, so a clear floor of roughly 144 by 108 in. Narrower than that, buy the 60 in version and seat four properly instead of six badly.

6 ft holds 4 ft sinks

VIAGDO 6 ft artificial olive tree with planter

6 ft tall · faux olive · planter included · over 800 leaves

A dining room has no sofa, no bed and no bookcase, so the walls stay hard and the corners stay empty. One tall green thing by the window does the work a sofa would do elsewhere. Six feet holds its own next to a 108 in curtain; a four foot tree beside a floor length panel looks like it is standing in a hole. Faux rather than live: this corner is the worst light in the apartment and a real olive drops every leaf by February.

The catchThe planter is always the weak part and this one is plain plastic. Drop the whole pot into a basket or a big ceramic planter and the tree goes from obviously fake to fine. I am not linking one: a laundry basket you own works for the first month.

24 past the end 30 at the side

Washable vintage print area rug, gray, 8 by 10 ft

    8 × 10 ft · low pile · machine washable · gray vintage print

The one rug in an apartment with a hard rule attached: 24 in past the table edge on every side, the distance a chair travels when somebody stands up. Under the 72 by 36 table, 8 by 10 leaves exactly 24 in at the ends and 30 in at the sides. Low pile means the chair legs slide instead of catching.

The catchAn 8 by 10 washable rug fits a domestic machine only if yours is large, which in a rented apartment it usually is not. Read the label as what happens when you spill, not as a weekly cycle. The print works too: a plain rug under a dining table shows every mark.

No. 15 · 24 in past every edge
A print of a dining table seen from the side, standing on a rug with two chairs pushed in. A third chair sits at the edge of the rug with an arrow measuring the gap between it and the table leg, and a curved arrow shows it travelling backwards. A fourth chair, the same chair after that travel, has come off the rug altogether and stands tipping on the bare floorboards.
Twenty four inches is how far a chair travels when somebody stands up.
Chenille, the site cat, lying under a dark wooden table on a woven rug, looking straight out at you.

This is the best seat and none of you can reach it.

If you only buy two things, buy the chairs and the rug. Those are the two you touch and the two that decide whether anybody stays at the table after the plates are cleared. See the dining rug rule drawn →

What this room gets right

Four decisions, all off the same tape measure

A dining room is a room where people sit still, face each other, and get up again. Every number below is there so somebody can push a chair back and walk out without the room fighting them.

rug +24 all round shade 33 up 36 walk 36 walk 72 x 36, six at 24
One plan. The four numbers below are all distances on it.
The corner of a dark walnut dining table with a glazed ceramic bowl, a brass candlestick and a linen runner, a boucle chair pulled in underneath, and a faded red patterned rug reaching past the table leg.
The four decisions, all in one corner: the rug running past the leg, the chair pulled in without moving the table, and the runner that is the only thing here nobody measured.
What this dining room is missing: anywhere to put a hot dish down. Serving happens at the buffet on the far wall, four steps with a casserole in oven gloves. A trivet or a small cart would close the gap, and neither is in this photo. See the dining room in the order you make the decisions →

Build it for less

The same room with the two big objects taken out

The table and the buffet are most of the money up there, and the two most likely to be the wrong size. Two of these rows ask you to buy nothing.

  • Instead of06 The buffet

The tape measure, and then probably nothing

A brass cased retractable tape measure with a red lock button, its marked blade pulled a few inches out with the hook on the end.

Take 17 in of buffet depth off the walkway behind the chairs. If under 36 in is left, no buffet fits. I make nothing on this row and it is the one I would most want a friend to read before ordering furniture.

    Nothing to buy
  • Instead of12 The 8 by 10 rug
48 table: on 72 table: off back legs Same rug, two tables

The 6 by 9, if your table is 48 to 60 in

The rug rule is table plus 48 in, so it scales with the table and not with your budget. A 48 by 30 table needs 96 by 78, which a 6 by 9 covers with room over. The 72 in table in the photo it does not, as the drawing shows.

  • Instead of08 The plates

The plates already in your cupboard

Nobody walks into a dining room and notices the plates before the light. If the six you own match and are not chipped, this row is finished. Buy one linen napkin set instead and put the rest into the rug, which is what is visible from the door.

    Nothing to buy
  • Add anywayThe bulb
clear: glare frosted: even Seated, you look at the bulb

GE Relax HD A19, 60 W replacement, 2700K frosted, four pack

The cheapest change in the room and the one that decides what the food looks like. A 4000K bulb makes every plate on this page look gray; the same table under 2700K looks like somewhere you would sit down. Put 2700K in the pendant and in whatever the ceiling has, and on a dimmer take it to about half for eating.

Skip it if the box in your drawer already says soft white. Then check the shade: behind clear glass, frosted is not optional.

Take all four and the room costs less than the buffet on its own, and six people can still sit down and get up again. See why 2700K and not 4000K →

In a rental

Why a dining room is the easiest room to do without asking anybody

A two ink print of a rented dining room drawn flat and face on. The only hole anywhere is a single hook in the ceiling; the pendant cord runs from it across the ceiling, down the far wall and into a socket at the baseboard. The wall itself is unbroken. The table, four chairs, a sideboard with a vase and a bowl on it, and a potted plant all stand on the floor, the table on a rug.
One hook in the ceiling, and a wall with nothing in it at all.

Quick answers

Six questions people ask before buying any of this

The table plus 24 in on every side, so the 72 by 36 in table here needs 120 by 84: an 8 by 10 ft rug. That 24 in is how far a chair travels when somebody stands up, and a leg landing on the rug edge is how people trip.

Bottom of the shade 30 to 36 in above the table top, and the shade half to two thirds of the table width: 18 to 24 in over a 36 in table. Lower and you duck to see the person opposite; higher and it lights the room, not the food.

Chenille, the site cat, sitting side on with her chin lifted and her eyes narrowed, thoroughly pleased with herself.

The hanging one is mine and I have thought about it.

Allow 24 in of table edge per person, 30 in for elbow room. Six at 24 in is 72 in of rectangle, three a side: the table in this photo. Six around a 60 in table means two at the ends and a shoulder to shoulder dinner.

36 in from table edge to wall to walk past, 42 to 48 in to get behind somebody seated. A 72 by 36 table therefore wants a clear floor of roughly 144 by 108 in. Measure that first: it decides whether the table fits.

Yes, with a plug-in swag pendant: one hook where you want the light, a swag across to the wall, a plug, no electrician. The trade is a visible cord; run it in one straight line rather than diagonally and it reads as deliberate.

They are the most comfortable thing in a hard room and the worst fabric to eat over: light boucle keeps a red wine ring and the loops hold crumbs. With small children, buy four for the sides and two wipeable chairs for the ends.
