No. 01 · Measuring guide

The most common decorating mistake I see is a rug that is too small.

Not a little small. Postage stamp small. A sad island of texture marooned in the middle of the floor with a coffee table standing on it like it is waiting for a bus.

And here is the annoying part. A too small rug makes the room itself look smaller, because it chops the floor into pieces instead of pulling it together. You bought the rug to make the space feel finished and it did the opposite.

It is also the most expensive mistake to undo. Rugs are heavy, return shipping is usually on you, and a wrong 8 × 10 weighs about forty pounds. Five minutes with a tape measure now saves you that whole afternoon.

So let’s fix it with a tape measure instead of a guess.

Three overhead plans of the same living room labeled all legs, front legs and floating, with the floating rug marked as the mistake.
Three ways to place the same rug. Two of them work.

The rug should connect your furniture, not sit between it.

If you can walk between your sofa and your rug without touching the rug, it is too small. That is the whole test, and it takes one look at the floor.

Back legs off the rug is not something anyone notices from the doorway. Front legs on is the answer unless you have the space and the budget for all legs on.

Find your size

Measure the room, not the sofa. Type the two numbers and I will tell you which rug fits, and how much bare floor it leaves you on each side.

Three ways to go from here

Your room takes an 8 × 10. Here is the size under it and the size over it, so you can see what you trade either way.

  1. Budget

    6 × 9 ft

Front legs of a standard sofa still land on it, with the coffee table fully on. It is 24 in narrower and 12 in shorter than the 8 × 10.

What you give upSide chairs sit off the rug. That is fine if they are against the wall and obvious if they float in the room.

See the 6 × 9 ft washable area rug on Amazon
  2. Recommended

    8 × 10 ft

Front legs of the sofa and of both chairs, with about a foot and a half of bare floor left on every side. This is what the calculator picked for your room.

What you give upThis is the size people order without measuring the walkway first, and the walkway is what sends it back. Measure it before you order.

See the 8 × 10 ft washable area rug on Amazon
  3. Upgrade

    9 × 12 ft

All four legs of the sofa on, and the room still keeps a border of floor. It is 12 in wider and 24 in longer than the 8 × 10.

What you give upWeight, and your deposit if you stop looking. Two people to lay it flat, and a rental floor you now cannot see. Lift a corner twice a year.

The three sizes drawn one inside the other, which is the only way to see how little separates them.
Six overhead rug plans side by side: 5 by 8 for a loveseat, 6 by 9 for a compact room, 8 by 10 for most living rooms, 9 by 12 for a large room, 10 by 14 for a sectional, and an 8 foot round.

Representative of the category, not the exact listing.

I have never once regretted the bigger rug. I have regretted the smaller one, twice, in the same apartment, which is how I learned any of this.

Placement

Now put it where it goes

The size is half the answer. The other half is where the thing lands. Front legs on is the rule: at least as wide as the sofa, ideally 6 to 12 in wider on each side, because that is what connects the furniture instead of leaving it floating. Drag the rug by its edge, or use the three buttons, and the scene tells you which of the three you are looking at.

Rug placement

This one is right

Front legs on

The rug is holding the furniture down instead of sitting in front of it, and you keep the bare floor at the walls where it belongs.

An 8 × 10 runs 18 in past each arm of the 84 in sofa.

Buttons, arrow keys or drag the top edge

Now pick the design, in 8 × 10 ft

The plan above is drawn in the position that answers the question: front legs on. The two others are floating, where nothing is standing on the rug and the seating reads as a separate thing, and all legs on, where every leg sits on it and you need the bigger size to get there.

Dining room with a walnut table on a pale rug, arrows marking the 24 inch minimum of rug beyond the table edge on each side.

Dining room

24 in

Twenty four inches, every time

This one has a hard number, because it is about chairs rather than looks. When someone pushes their chair back to stand up, the back legs need to stay on the rug. If they drop off the edge, the chair catches, the person does a little stumble, and everyone looks. You will notice it every single dinner.

table length + 48"  =  minimum rug length

Side view of a dining table standing on a rug. The same chair is drawn twice, once tucked under the table and once pushed back with its back legs still on the rug, the move shown by a dashed arc between the two, with an arrow across the gap from the table edge to the rug edge. On the right a second chair has been pushed back past the rug edge and tips as its legs drop onto bare boards.
The twenty four inches is how far a chair travels when someone stands up. The chair on the right ran out of rug.

The 8 ft round

Soalmost washable round rug, beige

8 ft across (96 in), low pile, polyester with a non-slip backing, machine washable

A 48 in round table needs 96 in of rug, and this is exactly that. It is the same washable beige family as the plain rug further down, cut as a circle, so crumbs go in the machine instead of into the pile. The catch: 96 in is the floor of the rule, not the comfortable middle. Under a table bigger than 48 in, the chairs will run out of rug.

See it on Amazon

One more thing for dining rooms specifically: get a low pile rug, for the crumbs. A shag rug under a dining table is a decision you make once.

If 24 inches will not fit in your nook, skip the rug entirely. A too small dining rug is worse than bare floor. Now the chairs catch and it looks wrong.
Bedroom with the rug starting below the nightstands and extending 18 to 24 inches past the sides and the foot of the bed.

Bedroom

18 to 24 in past the bed

Enough that your feet land on something soft when you get up. Place it under the bottom two thirds of the bed, starting just below the nightstands. Nobody sees the rug under your headboard and you are paying for that part. You want at least 18 to 24 in of rug past each side of the bed, and the sizes below clear it: an 8 × 10 laid sideways leaves a queen about 30 in on each side, and a 9 × 12 leaves a king about 34 in.

The budget version

Two overhead plans of the same bedroom side by side. On the left one large rug starts just below the nightstands and runs under the lower part of the bed, with arrows marking how far it reaches past the sides and the foot. On the right the same bed with no rug underneath and a narrow runner along each side instead, each about the length of the bed.
The runners cover the part you stand on, and nothing else.

Two runners, one on each side of the bed. A 2.5 × 8 ft washable runner rug on Amazon fits a queen, and a 2' × 6' washable runner rug on Amazon works next to a full. It is not as good as one big rug. It does solve the cold floor problem, and it costs a fraction of the 8 × 10.

Two overhead floor plans side by side: a large room leaving 18 inches of bare floor, and a small apartment leaving only 8 to 10 inches with a bigger rug.

The rule everyone repeats

“Leave 18 inches of bare floor,” and when to ignore it

In a big room, sure. In a small apartment it will wreck you. If your living room is 10 feet wide and you leave 18 inches on each side, you end up with a rug seven feet wide, too narrow to reach your furniture, and you are back to the floating island. The rule was written for rooms bigger than yours.

Chenille, the site cat, sitting with one front paw resting on the edge of a patterned rug, looking down at it.

The edge is the part she cares about. The middle is for everybody else.

In a small room, leave eight to ten inches instead and go bigger on the rug.

When the border rule and the furniture rule conflict, the furniture wins.

Overhead view of a living room floor with blue painter tape marking the exact footprint of a rug, and a hand pressing down the last strip.

Before you buy

Tape it out

Five minutes, and it has saved me from two returns.

  1. 01Mark the exact rug footprint with painter’s tape
  2. 02Walk around it. Sit on the sofa. See where your feet land.
  3. 03Live with it for a day before you order

You will know immediately whether it is too small, and you will know it for free instead of after paying return shipping on forty pounds of rug.

Use painter’s tape, not masking tape. I used masking tape once because it was eleven at night and it was what I had, and it took a strip of paint off the baseboard with it.

Flat lay of three material palettes on linen labeled Organic, Rustic and Collected: cream boucle with olive and walnut, gray weave with rust and dark oak, dusty blue velvet with oxblood and brass.

The rug itself

Why every size above is the same rug

It is quiet. Faded and washed looking instead of a bold pattern, so it sits under almost any palette without fighting anything. Low pile, which is what you want under a dining table. Machine washable, which matters more than it sounds if you have a dog or a toddler or both. And it comes in basically every size, so once you know your number you are not starting the search over.

It sits at 4.3 stars across more than five thousand ratings, and that is worth a word. Purchase confidence peaks somewhere around four to four and a half stars, not at five. A listing sitting at 4.9 with thousands of reviews is its own red flag.

“Wool look” on a rug listing usually means polypropylene, which flattens along the walking line inside a year and goes shiny there. Real wool and its lookalike, told apart after four years of use, is worth reading before you trust a rug photo more than the fine print under it.

Safavieh Natura wool rug, ivory

8 × 10 ft or 9 × 12 ft, 100% undyed wool, hand loomed, 3/8 inch pile

If this rug has to follow you through the next few leases, skip the polyester and go to wool. Wool springs back where the sofa legs stood and does not go shiny along the walking line, which is what ages a cheap rug first. Ivory with a quiet woven motif, so it sits under the same palettes as the plain one. The catch: it costs several times as much, it sheds for the first weeks, and it does not go in the machine. You blot it, you do not wash it.

Rug pad guide: a rug corner folded back to show its non-slip backing, beside a cutaway of rug, quarter inch felt pad and hardwood floor.

The add-on

Do you need a rug pad?

Less often than the internet tells you, and it depends what you want it for.

This particular rug already has a non-slip backing. If you are only worried about it sliding around, you can skip the pad.

A pad is worth it for two other reasons. It adds cushion, which you feel immediately underfoot on hardwood or tile. And it takes the wear, so the rug lasts longer in a hallway or under a dining table where chairs drag.

Buy the pad one size down from your rug, or trim it. A pad peeking out from under the edge looks worse than no pad.

Quick answers

Six questions about rug size

8 × 10. It fits a standard living room with a three seat sofa, a queen bed, and a 36 × 60 dining table. If you are guessing, guess this.

They can be, and it looks great, but front legs on is the standard and works in almost every room. Floating with nothing touching is the one to avoid.

Eighteen inches in a large room. Eight to ten in a small one. If the rule stops the rug from reaching your furniture, ignore the rule.

For most living rooms, yes. It works for a loveseat or a small apartment. With a full size sofa it will float.

At least 24 inches on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pushed back.

No. Rug pads are for hard floors. On carpet they mostly create a lump.

Chenille, the site cat, sitting on a rug that is still half rolled up.

She has already claimed it, measured or not.

One more thing

Measure before you buy. Tape it out if you are on the fence. And if you are stuck between two sizes, you already know what I am going to say.

Last, the pattern

The rug edit

Twenty four rugs, and this is the right place for them, which is to say the last one. You have the size by now. The pattern is the decision that can go wrong and still be fixed, so it goes after the one that cannot.

Each one shows a drawing of its pattern, its palette and the seller’s own words. The drawing is mine, not a photograph of the rug: the photograph you should judge it on is the one on its Amazon page, taken by whoever makes it. Most of these come in several sizes, so the measurement printed here is only the one the listing opens with. Take your number from the calculator above and pick that size on their page.

Where a listing says washable, it says so below. Where it does not, it is not a secret I am keeping: the listing does not claim it.

  • 01 Drawing of the pattern. Dense black, gray and cream abstract marks, like ink scribbled over a pale ground.

    Artistic Mix

Washable abstract area rug, black gray and gold

    8 × 10 ft · washable

Black, gray and gold on a rented floor is a lot of rug. I would only put this under a sofa I already knew was plain.

  • 02 Drawing of the pattern. Soft mottled beige, almost plain, with the pattern only just visible in the tone.

    Soft Neutral

    Washable abstract area rug, beige

    8 × 10 ft · washable

The one I would buy if I were furnishing around things I already own. Beige is not a style. It is a decision to spend the color somewhere else.

  • 03 Drawing of the pattern. A pale beige traditional medallion, low in contrast and worn looking.

    Classic Calm

Soalmost washable area rug, soft beige

    8 × 10 ft · washable

This is the plain rug the calculator links to, in every size, and the one the calculator opens with. Its section is further up.

  • 04 Drawing of the pattern. Vertical brown and cream streaks running the length of the rug, like weathered planks.

    Organic Texture

Washable abstract area rug, brown and white

    8 × 10 ft · washable

Brown and white, washable, and 8 by 10, the size most living rooms in this guide end up needing.

  • 05 Drawing of the pattern. A mottled sage green surface with darker leafy blotches through it.

    Natural Blend

Soalmost abstract rug, washable, green and black

    8 × 10 ft · washable

The only green here. If your room has no plant and no view, a green floor does some of that work for you.

  • 06 Drawing of the pattern. Large black and off white diamonds set on the diagonal.

    Graphic Contrast

GarveeHome checkered area rug, black and white, washable

    5 × 7 ft · washable

A checkerboard never pretends to be a texture. Either you want the floor to speak or you would rather it did not.

  • 07 Drawing of the pattern. Black concentric curved lines swirling across a cream ground.

    Modern Flow

Abani cream and black swirl area rug, low pile

    6 × 9 ft · washable not stated

Low pile, says the listing, and that is the line to read before the pattern. A door has to open over it.

  • 08 Drawing of the pattern. A grid of small squares in red, blue, tan and cream.

    Playful Color

PureCozy checkered area rug, soft fluffy shag

    8 × 10 ft · washable

Shag. Warm underfoot and the hardest thing on this page to vacuum. I would not put it under a dining table.

  • 09 Drawing of the pattern. Loose blue brushstroke ovals scattered over white.

    Coastal Energy

Abani blue and gray modern circles, washable, polypropylene

sold in several sizes · washable

The listing does not open with a size because it is sold in several. Take your number from the calculator above and pick that size on their page.

  • 10 Drawing of the pattern. Blocks of rust, ochre, gray and deep red crossed by circle arcs.

    Rich & Earthy

Unique Loom Barista collection, Kouillou, power-loomed polypropylene

    7 ft 1 in x 10 ft · washable not stated

Power loomed polypropylene, in the listing’s own words. That is the fiber that goes shiny along the walking line, and the materials guide says what that costs you.

  • 11 Drawing of the pattern. Overlapping circles in red, tan, black and cream.

    Retro Warm

    Rugshop overlapping circles, multi

    9 × 12 ft · washable not stated

Nine by twelve is a room filler. Measure your walkway before you fall for the drawing, because this is the size that eats a doorway.

  • 12 Drawing of the pattern. Mottled blue and white, like watery splatter.

    Airy Classic

RELEANY washable abstract area rug, blue and gray

    5 × 7 ft · washable

Blue is the accent most rented rooms are missing and the one most people are afraid of. This one is washable, so the fear is cheaper.

  • 13 Drawing of the pattern. Soft gold and lilac floral speckle over cream.

    Large Neutral

LOONGRUG washable large neutral modern rug

    10 × 14 ft · washable

Ten by fourteen and washable is a rare pair. If your room is that big, this is a short list of one.

  • 14 Drawing of the pattern. Brown, black and cream geometric blocks.

    Modern Earth

Geometric patchwork indoor area rug, chocolate

    5 × 7 ft · washable not stated

Chocolate is darker than a rented beige carpet, which is what makes it read as deliberate.

  • 15 Drawing of the pattern. A gray ground with large black and cream circle arcs across it.

    Sophisticated Lines

Rugshop wavy circles, fade resistant, gray

    5 ft 3 in x 7 ft · washable not stated

Fade resistant is the claim on the listing. It is the one that matters if this lands where the afternoon sun does.

  • 16 Drawing of the pattern. Dark gray and gold mottled blocks cut by a single arc.

    Striking Depth

Unique Loom Barista collection, Kouillou, square

4 ft 1 in square · washable not stated

Square, and small. This is a nook rug, or a rug under a round table. It will not reach a sofa.

  • 17 Drawing of the pattern. Deep red, olive and cream curves sweeping across the rug.

    Earthy Motion

    Unique Loom Barista collection, Ngada

    4 ft 1 in x 6 ft 1 in · washable not stated

Too small to reach a sofa. Its job is beside a bed or down a narrow hallway, where it has a wall to relate to.

  • 18 Drawing of the pattern. Brown, black and cream geometric blocks, close in family to number 14.

    Bold Balance

Earth tone mid century rug, brown and black

    5 × 7 ft · washable not stated

Brown and black and nothing else, says the listing. It wants something pale above it or the corner goes heavy.

  • 19 Drawing of the pattern. Red, black and cream squares with circle outlines over them.

    Retro Pop

Well Woven Barclay arcs and shapes, red modern geometric

    5 ft 3 in x 7 ft 3 in · washable not stated

The loudest thing on this page. Red on the floor commits the whole room, and there is no quiet way to own it.

  • 20 Drawing of the pattern. Black, gray and cream horizontal broken stripes.

    Textured Layers

    SUPERIOR Rockwood modern geometric, chocolate

    8 × 10 ft · washable not stated

Full living room size in a dark color. That pair is how you stop noticing a floor you are not allowed to change.

  • 21 Drawing of the pattern. Brown and black horizontal streaks, like weathered wood.

    Rustic Modern

    Ciicool modern abstract, washable, brown

    4 × 6 ft · washable

Small and washable. Those two together mean one job: the corner that gets dirty, not the room the rug has to anchor.

  • 22 Drawing of the pattern. Cream with black arcs and taupe curves running across it.

    Understated Drama

    Luxe Weavers geometric abstract, beige

    6 × 9 ft · washable not stated

Six by nine, which is a size that can hold a sofa. The same rug is also sold at four by five, and at that size it floats under furniture, so this is the one worth buying.

  • 23 Drawing of the pattern. Terracotta, cream and brown geometric blocks and arcs.

    Modern Terracotta

Soft modern geometric abstract, machine washable

    5 × 7 ft · washable

Terracotta is the warm color this site keeps coming back to, because it is the one that does not fight wood.

  • 24 Drawing of the pattern. Blocks of black, warm gray and cream laid like a patchwork, with pale floral shapes bleeding across the seams.

    Faded Patchwork

SUPERIOR Pastiche collection, floral patchwork, jute backed, power loomed

    5 × 8 ft · washable not stated

The only jute backing here, and the listing puts it at 0.31 in thick. That is the one on this page that will clear a door and let a dining chair slide instead of catching. It is also sold as a runner, which none of the others are.

I have not lived with these rugs, and I am not going to write as though I had. What is under each one is its listing’s own words and how that size behaves against the numbers further up this page. The judgment is mine. The description is theirs. Number 03 is the plain rug the calculator links to, and it has its own section above.
