At least as wide as the sofa, ideally 6 to 12 in wider on each side.
It connects the furniture instead of floating between it. If you can walk between your sofa and your rug without touching the rug, it is too small.

Pick the question you came with
Sound familiar?
Almost always the culprit is a measurement. Here are the six I see most, each with the number that fixes it.
Build your room
Which room?
What bothers you most?
Try it
Your living room is __ by __. Here is the rug.
8 × 10 ft
244 × 305 cm
Leaves about 18 in of bare floor on the sides and 18 in at the ends.
Fifteen seconds
The rug goes down before the sofa moves. The curtain goes up before the lamp goes on. Drag the bar if you want to stop it somewhere.
The numbers
Most decorating advice tells you to trust your eye. That is no help at all when you are standing in an empty room holding a tape measure.
Rug · front legs on
Table · two thirds of the sofa
Art center · 57 to 60 in
Rod · 4 to 6 in above
Accent · the last 10 percent
Second of three light sources
At least as wide as the sofa, ideally 6 to 12 in wider on each side.
It connects the furniture instead of floating between it. If you can walk between your sofa and your rug without touching the rug, it is too small.
Get my rug size →Coffee table about two thirds the length of the sofa, sitting 14 to 18 in away from it.
Proportion, and you can still sit at the ends. Close enough to reach a glass without standing up, far enough to walk past without a bruise on the shin.
Size my coffee table →From the floor to the center of the piece, 57 to 60 in, even under a tall ceiling: go bigger or wider, not higher.
A starting point between standing and seated eye level, not a museum rule, and lower where you sit. It is lower than you think, which is why most art in most apartments hangs about a hand too high.
Hang it at eye level →Rod as close to the ceiling as the bracket allows, never less than 4 to 6 in above the frame. Brackets 4 to 10 in past the frame on each side.
The window reads taller and wider than it is. No-drill brackets do this, so it survives a lease.
Get my curtain height →Sixty percent dominant, thirty percent secondary, ten percent accent.
It works in most palettes and most rooms. The pillows are the part you are allowed to change on a Saturday afternoon, and all they do is echo the ten.
Split my room 60 / 30 / 10 →Three layers in a room: ambient, task and accent, from at least three separate sources.
One ceiling light flattens everything under it, including you. Plug-in sconces and floor lamps add the other two without touching the wiring, which matters when the fixture is not yours.
Pick the lamps →By room
Most people arrive here with one room that is not working. Start there, not with a mood board.

A note from Nora
Most decorating advice is written for people who own their walls. This starts from the lease.
You cannot knock a wall through or retile the bathroom, and one nail in the wrong place comes out of your deposit. So I stick to numbers you can measure and things you can take down and pack when the lease is up.
Every rule here is checked against at least two sources. Where they disagree, I show you the range instead of picking a favorite, and when a rule falls apart in a small room, I say so, even when the honest answer is to buy nothing.
By look
Three directions, one method underneath. Pick the one your room already leans toward, then steal the formula.
This wall is limewash. Gorgeous, and not yours to paint.
$50 to 90 · 3 h · 20 min to undo
The look without the landlord conversation. Same texture on the wall, same warm shadow in the afternoon, and on moving day it peels off into a trash bag.
On the channel
One scrap of wallpaper, a lot of arsenic in his hair, and a verdict of vibes. What the green on his walls could and could not do, and what is under your own paint.
